How To Be A Great MC- Multiple Speaking Intelligences Part One

What are the secrets of being a great MC?

Being asked to MC an event can happen anytime. At a social setting, at work or for more formal occasions.

Because of my business as a professional speaker, I'm often called on to be a professional MC.

How To Be A Great MC- Multiple Speaking Intelligences Part One

Take for example my recent experiences hosting the Real Estate Institute of WA's (REIWA) formal annual dinner, and the presentation of the Kevin Sullivan memorial Award, the Institute's highest accolade.

A professional MC can make or break an event.

What do people remember?

It's not the children's choir, the corporate video or the music. It's not even the venue or the food.

The secret to a great event is the person who brings all of these diverse elements together and then delivers them with personality, humour and charm.

Your choice of Master of Ceremonies will have a big impact on the success of your event.

And the fact is, high profile does not equal success. I've heard famous name MCs tell inappropriate jokes and get guests, organisers and sponsors immediately offside.

The MC (also known as Emcee) has a very unique role to play at an event. There are many duties to perform and not everyone can be organised and entertaining at the same time. It's a special skill.

But the good thing is, it is a learned skill.

Here is the first part of a series of articles on what I call the multiple speaking intelligences every aspiring or experienced leader needs.

In this first part, here are 10 Tips on how to be a great MC for every occasion.

1. Get A Good Briefing

Clarify with the event organiser beforehand what their expectations are and what they want exactly.

2. Work To A Running Sheet

There is a lot to remember and do as an MC. Make sure your event organiser provides a running sheet so you know what happens and when.

3. Run On Time

The major role of a good MC is to keep the event running on time. It is your role to make this happen. No one likes an event that runs over time.

You need to be firm on time. This is one element that is non-negotiable.

4. Be The Glue That Holds The Event Together

Your role as MC is to be the glue or cement that holds the event together.

You have to link, segue and make a transition directly from one section or theme to another during the entire event.

The best MCs do this seemlessly and effortlessly.

5. Focus On The Speakers and Performers

Remember the speakers or performers you are introducing are the stars of the show not the MC.

Don't grandstand, big note or let your ego get in the way.

Let the event elements, be they speakers, performers or award winners shine.

6. Rehearse

Spend time at the venue before hand getting used to the stage, lighting and sound system.

Practice your lines out loud. Warm up your voice. Get in the moment.

7. Research

Research the speakers or performers you are introducing.

As an absolute minimum do a Google search on them. Always request a formal introduction from speakers.

Most professional speakers will provide a prepared introduction.

8. Provide a Mix of Entertainment and Information

The key to a good MC is light and shade.

9. Let Your Personality Come Through and Be Yourself

Don't be overly wooden or scripted. Let your personality shine through.

10. Have Fun

If you are having fun so are the others speakers and the audience.

Relax and enjoy the moment.

Poor Boy - a Declamation Piece

Look at me!!! I am part of the masses... the facet of society many so often push around... Why can't they ever stop to think... that, I am human too... that I, too, feel like them... Why can't you answer me??? You must have something in mind... Why can't you answer me??? I know you must have something in mind... Where is their sense of morality??? They trampled upon me as if I was trash... I never did them any wrong!!! Was it a sin I committed when I came to this world as a poor boy??? A poor boy... yes that's what I am... A state of being I didn't even choose at the first place. Was it a sin I committed, to be born like this?? Now tell me!!! Did you ever have the right to choose your status in life when you were born??? Think!!! Before you condemn me... Do I ever have a choice?

I am deprived of all the chances in life... I am looked down upon by people as someone who is too dirty... too smelly... too poor... but I have a heart... Yes!!! I have a golden heart... For every coin I get out of begging helps my younger siblings to survive. The money I earn goes a long way to feed my family... How about you??? How do you feed your family??? Are you 100% sure you work decent enough to earn more??? Are you sure that the money you earned didn't come from a dirty strategy other corrupt politicians used to do to gain power? Can you honestly look at your child straight in the eye true to your heart's core and with a clear conscience?? Have you ever been aware that the money you use to feed your family is an outcome of your hard labor and decent job you can always be proud of??? WHY DID YOU SUDDENLY BECOME QUIET??? WHAT IS IN YOUR MIND NOW?? Tell me!!! Come on, tell me!!!

Huh!!! You have good clothes, you never experienced sleeping without a roof, you eat good food, you enjoy the comforts of life... But, somewhere deep in your mind, your conscience haunts you... Yes... you will never sleep good... Within your subconscious mind, your guilty conscience still haunts you, constantly reminding you about your evil ways... Wow... And you still think you are clean???

Poor Boy - a Declamation Piece

Outside, you smell fresh and clean, but deep within your soul... I know you stink... Oh... I believe that kind of smell goes through your body... Yes your soul is bound to burn in hell!!! And look at me! I am just a poor boy... honestly begging for mercy from people like you, to feed my brothers and sisters... to survive, but I never stepped down on anyone. I never stole from anyone nor did I ever use anyone to improve our lives... I can sleep good... Can you??? With a kind conscience like that, well, I don't think so. You will never sleep well... you don't have any right to sleep with a sound mind and a light heart...

Public Speaking - Ways to Deliver Your Speech

There are 4 possible ways to deliver your speech in public speaking. Each way has its' pros and cons. The method that s picked will depend on your circumstances. However, there is one way that is the most effective in the majority of cases.

The 4 ways to deliver your speech are:

1. Read it to the audience

Public Speaking - Ways to Deliver Your Speech

In this way the speech is written out and read aloud word for word to the audience. When giving your first speeches this method is attractive because the speaker does not rely on their memory due to the security of the speech. This does ensure that nothing is forgotten and the speech is accurate. The disadvantage is that you lose your personal appeal because your head is bowed reading. And it is difficult to talk expressively and maintain a conversational aspect to your delivery. However it is useful in political and highly controversial speeches to read aloud to prevent misquotes or being sued.

2. Memorize and deliver to your audience

The advantage of this method is that you can employ phrases that you wouldn't normally use and you are not tied down to reading your speech. You can look at your audience and move around. The difficulty with this approach is if you forget your "lines" and then struggle to determine where you are up to. Also the natural conversational quality of your delivery is difficult to maintain and it is often stiff and stilted.

3. Impromptu Speech

In an impromptu speech the speaker has not prepared a speech and is delivering his thoughts and word on the spur of the moment. This method is very flexible but rarely achieves the quality of a well prepared speech. It is best avoided if you can. But if you think you may be called on to say a few words it is handy to have a few "lines" prepared to avoid any embarrassments. Most experienced speakers have developed some reliable responses to use when they are called upon to make impromptu remarks.

4. Prepare a speaking outline and memorize the ideas

This approach is known as the extemporaneous method. The speech can be delivered with or without notes. When thoroughly prepared (which can include writing your speech in full initially) and practiced there is little need for notes. This is the easiest way for the speaker to achieve the ability to speak in a natural conversational manner. It also gives the ability to adapt the speech for any unexpected events. It does take more time and preparation than the other ways outlined here.

When starting out, it is tempting to read your speech or memorize and recite it word for word. Be careful with these methods because it is difficult to connect with the audience.

When called on for impromptu remarks ensure you have a few memorized responses (an emergency kit). The preferred method is to prepare thoroughly for your speech and memorize the ideas. Your speech has the potential to be more natural and to be more effective in achieving your purpose.

Public Speaking - Types of Speeches

Have you ever tried to create a speech, but the ideas just didn't seem to gel? You know: they seem good enough, they support your message, but they just don't go together.

When preparing your speech, it helps if you know what type of speech you want to create. There are four types:

Informational: this is the most prevalent type of speech. Your goal is to provide information to your audience. It is often presented with a series of numbers, statistics, and many PowerPoint slides... which tend to make it overdrawn and boring. Inspiring: in this type of speech, you seek to inspire your audience to change something in their lives. This is often called a "motivational speech". In fact, that is a misnomer. Motivation comes from within, nobody can give it to you. Inspiration seeks to draw that motivation from audience members in order to get them to act. Entertaining: the main goal of this speech is to make the audience laugh and to enjoy themselves. These ais the format of most after-dinner speeches. Notice that an entertaining speech is not the same as a standup routine. It is much smoother and logical in its flow. In an entertaining speech, the message comes second to the enjoyment of the audience. Persuasive: it aims to convince an audience of your point of view.Typically, this is a sales presentation. Your goal is to convince an audience of the benefits of your product or service, and your speech is constructed accordingly.

Public Speaking - Types of Speeches

Although your speech focuses on one of these types, it helps if you can include aspects of each type in your final delivery. A sales speech will be much more effective if it contains information, is entertaining, and inspiring.

If you have trouble figuring out which ideas to keep and which ones to chuck, first decide on a type of speech and keep only the ideas which fit that type. Once you've got the core elements in place, add elements that will enhance it without taking away from the core message.

Public Speaking Topics - How to Choose a Great Topic For Your Speech

What is the importance of public speaking topics?

Let's start at the beginning. Do you have to give a speech? While it is a nerve-wracking prospect for most people, the good news is that if you come up with a great topic for your speech, which you can prepare well for, then the actual speech does not need to be something to dread.

Great public speaking topics makes it easier for you to relax and get into public speaking

Public Speaking Topics - How to Choose a Great Topic For Your Speech

It really is important to have a speech topic that you can get passionate about - or if not passionate then at least interested. This way you'll have more fun researching the speech and you will be able to relax into your interesting, informative speech topic and focus on the content of your speech rather than focusing on how nervous you are.

Persuasive speech topics

Do you need to give a persuasive speech - perhaps a sales speech, or narrative speech topics to a panel where you need to persuade the listeners over to your point of view? In these situations, the best possible speech topic to use is a story. Decide what your main points are, what you need to get across to your audience, and then for each point pick one or two stories that illustrate it.

People are not persuaded so much by facts as by emotion, and a great public speaking tip is to incorporate stories in order to make your speech much more persuasive.

Public speaking topics for groups

Are you just starting out in public speaking? Do you need to come up with interesting speech topics that you can present to a group but are not sure what topic to cover?

Here are some questions to ask that will help you choose the right speech topic for your audience - and for you, the speaker.

What is my audience interested in? What is the purpose of their group and what topics, that I could use in my speech, could relate to their purpose? What are the goals of my audience? Do they want to have a fun social evening, to achieve a business goal, to learn about something, to laugh? What are my goals for this speech? How can I relate my own goals to those of my audience?
Researching your speech topic - the key to success

When you have a great idea for a speech topic, researching it will be fun and easy. Here is the process I use for researching my own speech topics when preparing for a public speaking topic. You can follow my process or tailor it to one that will get YOU motivated and excited!

First I brainstorm my topic. I sit down with paper and some colored pens and let my imagination run riot. I jot down or sketch any and all ideas that come into my head that relate to my speech topic. Next, I go to my local library and immerse myself in the appropriate section that relates to my speech topic. I pull out books at random and browse them, jotting any ideas or useful facts that I come across down in my notebook. Finally, I set aside some quiet time to use the computer and write up my notes into speech form. Any extra research that I need to do at this stage, I use the Internet, being careful to take facts and figures only from reputable web sites.

Using these public speaking tips and your own imagination and thoughts, you are sure to come up with great public speaking topics!

How to Create an Effective Public Speaking Outline

Creating an effective speaking outline is the core essential to ensuring that you succeed in your presentation. Preparation is a key element of success. The more time you spend organizing your thoughts, your goals, your motivations, and the facts that you will present to an audience, the better you will be at delivering these key items of interest. Here, you will be presented with a sample of a basic public speaking outline. If you put this to work for you, you are quite likely to walk out a success once the presentation has concluded and the curtains have closed.

I. Introduction

A. The first component of the introduction should get the attention of the individuals in the audience. You have to consider creative strategies to successfully scoop the audience right up in your hand and gain control of them. The interest of the audience is absolutely valuable to optimize the effectiveness of the public speech as a whole.

How to Create an Effective Public Speaking Outline

1. You may choose to use an interaction strategy with the audience.

2. You may elect to start off with a personal account that is enlightening and exciting to the listener.

3. You may choose to do something that keeps the audience tuned in for your next move.

B. Now, it is time to establish credibility. People want to know who you are and why you are the one that is issuing the speech. It is important that you handle this task at this point of the presentation.

C. Now, your speech outline should walk right into an introduction on the information that you will be revealing throughout the course of the public speech.

II. Main Event

A. When you come to the main event in your presentation, it is important to ensure that you have approximately three main points that you would like to convey to your audience.

B. While presenting facts and figures, it is important to provide various types of illustrations, important numbers that are related to your topic, as well as many different types of testimony to your audience.

C. It is important to ensure that you have an interaction event when concluding the presentation. While conducting this interaction, reinforce as much as you possibly can to the audience in order to ensure that their minds have been refreshed.

III. Conclusion

A. When creating a public speaking outline, it is essential that you take the time to restate important facts as you conclude the presentation.

B. Now, it is important to create a "call to action" - this will inform your audience of what they need to do next.

C. Now, it is time to conclude the presentation with any last minute emphasis and a basic "thank you" to the audience that has been a part of your presentation.

Creating an effective public speaking outline can mean the difference between delivering a memorable speech that will stay fresh in the minds of your audience, or creating a presentation that loses the interest of the audience before the presentation is concluded. If you want to be a highly motivated, successful individual who is revered when it comes to presentations, be sure to whip that paper and pen out and create a public speaking outline that will assist you in delivering your message.

How to Cure Fear of Public Speaking - 8 Proven Ways To Overcoming Fear Of Public Speaking

Here's your opportunity to discover how to cure fear of public speaking. Did you know that most individuals who fear public speaking are troubled about being perceived as a bad speaker or labeled in a negative way? Virtually all of your fears and anxiousness about public speaking is founded on ideations that have absolutely nothing to do with reality. If you ranked public speaking among fears, it is commonly ranked as the number one fear, exceeding even the fearfulness of dying. So what makes up the secret to overcoming fear of public speaking? This article will help you understand what causes that fear and provide 8 ways to overcome them.

Numerous things may stimulate the fear of public speaking. Gloss phobia or speech anxiety is the fearfulness of public speaking and perhaps related to, or occasionally to include a more intense anxiety disorder. The reasons of this anxiousness are unsuccessful ideas and anxiety-arousing situations. If you or anyone you know is hurting by this phobic disorder for public speaking it merely means that you are fearful about confronting sociable and professional situations in life. If allowed and the anxiety is serious enough, it may interfere with your power to present an adequate speech. Fortunately for some people, the benefits from being able to overcome fear of public speaking are substantial.

In that respect there are 8 proven ways/tips for superb public speaking that can help you no matter what your degree of anxiety or experience:

How to Cure Fear of Public Speaking - 8 Proven Ways To Overcoming Fear Of Public Speaking

1. Pick out a subject that you are comfortable with, know intimately and have a passion for.

2. Always maintain a positive mental and physical attitude.

3. Make sure you set realistic goals and just keep in mind that there's no such thing as a flawless speech so it is futile to try and present one.

4. Regard the audience as a source of support and your reason for giving the presentation in the first place, not as a judge and jury hoping you will fail

5. You must never read your speech word for word (reading in public is not public speaking)

6. You should never be apologetic for anything at the beginning of your speech

7. It's important for you to know and remember that virtually all signs of nervousness are never detected by the audience but can and will appear amplified by you the speaker.

8. Use a mirror and practice in front of it or in the presence of a friend or family member. Practicing your speech in their presence will give you the opportunity to get constructive feedback from them.

The most beneficial cure for your individual responses to speech anxiety is one or a combination that works out best for you individually. The common difficulties of public speaking are removed because you will be concentrating on the fundamental principles listed above and not the actual act of speaking.

Finally, you must understand that there are additional concepts and techniques that you will need to utilize that will help make you a better public speaker. Overcoming fear of public speaking and learning how to cure fear of public speaking is just the first step. You can find plenty of valuable suggestions and tips in addition to strategies that you will be able to apply immediately so that you can feel confident about taking the second step to public speaking success.

Public Speaking - "Picture Them Naked" And Other Stupid Ways To Get Over A Fear Of Public Speaking

Nervous first-time public speakers have long been told a number of "creative" ways to help them get past the fear of public speaking. As a speech coach, communication consultant, and a professional speaker myself, I can tell you these creative bits of advice designed to help you get over being scared are not only stupid, but will likely hurt you and make you feel worse.

In no particular order, here are the three most common-- and stupidest --ways people say to get past feeling nervous. When you hear these, run from the other person and DO NOT TAKE ANY ADVICE FROM THEM!!! (sorry to yell).

1. "Picture them naked."

Public Speaking - "Picture Them Naked" And Other Stupid Ways To Get Over A Fear Of Public Speaking

This seemingly pornographic advice refers to imagining your audience in some position that lowers their perceived power. Other variations on this theme include, "Picture them in their underwear" and "picture them on the toilet." To all of these (and especially that last one about the loo), I say, "Ew." And how distracting! Not only do you have to remember your speech but now you have to visualize people in unflattering positions? No thank you. What's better? Visualize yourself delivering your speech calmly and confidently. And as for what to do with your audience? Look at them as people interested in hearing what you have to say and strive to make a connection with them.

2. "Instead of making eye contact look at their foreheads/chin."

Or "Look at the back of the room." (Really?) People do notice if you're not looking them in the eye. Unless you are in a large auditorium on a stage far removed from the audience, people will be able to tell if you are avoiding eye contact. And then they will not trust you and you will lose rapport quickly. Find people who seem genuinely interested in your presentation and speak to each one individually during your speech.

3. "Start off with a joke."

Only start your presentation with a joke if you are a priest delivering your Sunday homily or a comedian. Or-- if the joke is completely relevant to your speech. But if you feel nervous speaking to a group, it's not a good idea to lead off with humor. Starting with some random joke will only lower your credibility during the first 10 seconds when audiences are making their first impression of you. Then what if they don't laugh? Then you'll feeling more uncomfortable with your audience right off the bat. If they don't laugh, well now you're even more nervous because the first thing you planned bombed.

So what is the best way to get past your nerves? Practice and prepare.
Visualize your speech going exactly as you want it to go. And strive to make a connection with your audience by paying attention to them. Remember, delivering a speech is not about you -- it's about your audience and giving them what they want during your public speaking presentations.

Speakers - Setting Fees For Workshops and Other Speaking Engagements (Purposely Not Called 'Gigs')

Speakers (of every different ilk, i.e., keynoters, workshop leaders, consultants, trainers, etc.) often wonder what to charge and how to decide their fees. Since I have been a speaker (in all of these roles) for many years, I've given this question a fair amount of consideration. Here are some ideas on how to determine your fee:

Sometimes, I do have a flat fee, but rarely. For example, for me to do a Productivity Power Day(tm) in someone's office - in the area where I live - then it's a flat rate. If I have to travel, it goes up some because I will be spending the night out of town, etc. Productivity Power Days are quite similar in scope and process, so it's one of the reason I can quote an exact fee right on my website or when someone calls me. For essentially all other endeavors (speaking & consulting), there is much more involved in making the determination.

For speaking engagements even within my own area, I have a base rate and then I make a final determination based on some (or all) of the following factors:
Is this a brand new workshop (speech, etc.) or one I've done before and will be able to offer in essentially the same way or with minor modifications? Are the people ones who will be easy to work with (or difficult to work with)? Often, I don't know this until I've worked with them in the past...and then I know, believe me! What is the expected number of participants? It takes far more energy to work with a group of 100 or 200 (for a workshop, for example) than a group of 35. So, I need to know the number of people who will be in attendance. Is this part of a series of workshops/seminars I will be doing for this group or is it a stand-alone? I prefer to work with people over longer periods of time - developing relationships and building community and trust. When people are interested in that as well, they receive a different price than those who want a one-shot event. If I am going out of area, then I take the following into consideration, as well:
Time zones crossed (more of an issue as I get older!) I add a certain amount for each time zone I hop. Ease or difficulty in travel (flying all the way across the country in one plane vs. hopping 3 different planes, taking a bus, then renting a car to even get 1/3 of the way across the country).

So, these are issues I take into consideration, but each person needs to determine what it is that makes the work easier or harder for him/her.

Sometimes, one factor to consider is whether you are trying to build up a market -- and in order to penetrate that market, you choose to price yourself a bit lower than you will later on...I have certainly done that (and continue to) in certain markets.

Always, always, always, however....remember the value you're bringing to your clients and price yourself accordingly. And to go back to the title, for heaven's sake, don't call what you do 'gigs'! Unprofessional and unworthy, in my opinion, which is what you got in this article, of course!
